At Mymind Psychology we utilise Cogpack as treatment platform in a systematic fashion under guidance of an experienced Clinical Psychologist adjunct to other interventions such as CBT and Behaviour activation.

COGPACK is a cognitive remediation suite that offers cognitive remediation solutions for clinicians and their clients. While it is recommended for use with a qualified provider, there is a version available for users at home on their own. It offers exercises with a variety of difficulty levels to target visual-motor functioning, comprehension, attention, memory, language use, and skills training. It also allows clinicians and users to determine the initial difficulty level. COGPACK allows the supervising clinician to be directly involved in their clients’ training, and provides feedback that allows them to track progress over time. Scores can also be compared to periodically updated norms.

Cognitive rehabilitation therapy is a program to help brain-injured or otherwise cognitively impaired individuals to restore normal functioning, or to compensate for cognitive deficits.[1] It entails an individualized program of specific skills training and practice plus metacognitive strategies. Metacognitive strategies include helping the patient increase self-awareness regarding problem-solving skills by learning how to monitor the effectiveness of these skills and self-correct when necessary.

Cognitive rehabilitation therapy has been shown to be effective for individuals who suffered a stroke in the left or right hemisphere.[2] A computer-assisted type of cognitive rehabilitation therapy called cognitive remediation therapy has been used to treat schizophrenia, ADHD, and major depressive disorder.[3][4][5][6][7]

It may also be recommended for traumatic brain injury, such as that suffered by U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, according to Dr. Gregory J. O'Shanick of the Brain Injury Association of America.[8] Her new doctor has confirmed that it will be part of her rehabilitation

Rehabilitation of sensory and cognitive function typically involves methods for retraining neural pathways or training new neural pathways to regain or improve neurocognitive functioning that has been diminished by disease or trauma. Three common neuropsychological problems treatable with rehabilitation are attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)concussion, and spinal cord injury.

Rehabilitation research and practices are a fertile area for clinical neuropsychologists and others.

Cognitive remediation therapy

Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), also called cognitive enhancement therapy (CET), is a cognitive rehabilitation therapy developed at King's College in London designed to improve neurocognitive abilities such as attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility and planning, and executive functioning which leads to improved social functioning.

In patients with schizophrenia, atypical antipsychotic medications have increased the effectiveness of symptom management, but patients may remain socially or cognitively disabled. CET is recommended for patients with schizophrenia who are stable with low risk of relapse.

Also people with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa are considered to be cognitively inflexible with their perspectives of food.[4] In London, CRT was beneficial in the treatment of adults with anorexia nervosa, and in Poland among adolescents with anorexia nervosa.[9] In the United States clinical trials are still being conducted by Stanford University in subjects over 16 as a conjunctive therapy with family based treatment.

CRT has also been shown to be useful in both children and adults with ADHD, as well as for cognitive deficits associated with major depressive disorder CRT has also been used in a subset of pediatric cancer survivors who experienced cognitive impairment due to the effects of cancer or cancer treatment on cognitive functioning. Clinical trials are slated to begin in 2010 in the United States by the National Institute of Health and the National Institute of Drug Abuse on the efficacy of cognitive remediation upon the cognitive deficits associated with drug abuse.

CRT is usually administered via use of a computer, with the tasks appearing on the monitor.
